Battery draw, RAP power timer resetting keeping BCM awake

Shop: LUTTRELLS AUTO CENTER
Date: 10/16/2008

The vehicle has a draw/drain on battery. If narrowed down to Courtesy light relay or BCM inadvertent power relay inspect for aftermarket DVD player in rear headliner. If it has one, pull the dome lamp and most likely it will get its main power there. If the DVD player is tapped into the ORANGE wire you have most likely found the problem. The orange wire is the LAMP REQUEST lead to the BCM.
The BCM senses the DVD as a lamp being on. What this does is when the key is out and the door is shut, the interior lamps are shut off, and the inadvertent power relays will time out in about 20 minutes. If someone turns on a dome lamp or aftermarket stuff is incorrectly wired, the BCM sees power flowing on the lamp request wire and will keep inadvertent power powered until timed out for about 2 seconds then reset the timer hence a constant draw.
You can actually test for this at the BCM by monitoring the voltage at lamp request wire, When it does time out for that 2 seconds the wire should show ground at once, if the voltage does not go away at once then there is a capacitive power at use (usually aftermarket stuff) bleeding voltage slow enough that when the BCM still sees voltage on that lamp request wire it will re-energize the wire for another 20 minutes.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON RUNS ROUGH

Shop: VILLAGE CENTER AUTO CARE

If you come across any 1.8L V.W.'s "Jetta, Passat" with a customer complaint of check engine light, runs rough, check for collapsed, & or cracked vacuum hose that runs along the intake. "It's between intake & coolant resevoir". It's hard to use a smoke machine on these engines due to the fact that the vacuum lines go from rubber to molded plastic & are all clamped, but with close visual inspection the problem will be quite obvious. Scanning PCM the were 5 codes p0171 "bank 1 too lean" to p0300-p0301-p0302-p0303-p0304. "all misfires". The replacement hose part number from Volkswagen is 06B-133-783-BC.

TESTS W/CODES - 2.2L

If you get a honda with "cuts off complaint" and maybe the light around the "D" goes off. And the story doesn't fit a fuel pump problem, or a dist. bad problem. Then try this. Go to Ig. switch and start it. Then try turning the key backwards like you are going to turn it off. Start with a little pressure increasing slowly and if you find out that it is sensitive to cutting off with very little to no movement it needs a switch. This is tricky situation that will get you from time to time. This usually turns into the " It will start but will cut off when I let go of the key" complaint. But until it goes into the full blown complaint, it will cut off ocassionally. And they want it fixed now because they can't trust it to go somewhere. Had one today that has been around to 4 or 5 shops. Everybody doing or saying different stuff. Needed a switch. Very little testing and very happy customer.

First off the timing is critical, when they say 3 seconds and 7 seconds that must be exact. Step 3 when you push the pedal 5 times the mil light will start to blink then hold the pedal down until the mil light goes steady then in 3 seconds release the pedal and start the vehicle. Let it ilde for 1 minute. It took me several tries to make it work but it does work. Kevin Call

Tip: Blend door not working?? Don't Pull The Dash!!

1999 Dodge Pickup R2500
If you have a blend door that isn't working like it should, check the motor which can easily been seen from the passenger side floor board. If the motor is working, don't do what I did (pull the dash), just pull the motor. There is a small piece of plastic that attaches the motor to the metal blend door that easily breaks and is serviceable on its own.

Tire Pressure and Your Gas Mileage

Keeping Your Tires Filled Saves Gas and Money.
By Matthew Wright, About.com

Did you know that how much air you have in your tires can have a direct affect on your gas mileage? It's true. Here's why:
Let's say your tires are supposed to be filled to 35 psi. If they are filled correctly, six square inches of your tire are touching the road, just the way your tires were designed. But let some air out, and now the pressure is only 30 psi. Since your tire is like a balloon, the more air you have on the inside, the rounder and more firm your tire becomes. If you had six square inches touching the road at 35 psi, the flatter 30 psi tire will have eight square inches touching at once, making it harder for your engine to get things rolling from a dead stop. Here's another way to think of it. Say your dog is going to the vet, and she's not so interested in moving toward the car, so you pull. You start out pulling her with all four of her feet on the ground. We'll call this four square inches touching. But then she plops her rear end on the ground. You're now pulling 12 square inches, and boy is she harder to drag toward the car.

Unfortunately you can't dangle a piece of salami in front of your car to make it go, so you're left using the engine, which uses more gas the harder it pulls. Filling your tires to the correct pressure will make it easier on the engine, and that means you'll be using less gas. It can make a difference of a three or four miles per gallon. That's at least 36 more miles to the average tank of gas. At one tank of gas per week, you could be adding 1,872 free miles in a year! That's savings, and that's Automotive Empowerment for no money at all.

The 10 Commandments of Auto Repair

Funny, but good rules of thumb to safely work on your car.
By Matthew Wright, About.com

1-Thou shalt not place any essential portion of thy anatomy beneath a car that is not properly supported with jack stands or blocks.
2-Thou shalt not work on any part of the starting or charging system without first disconnecting the battery.
3-Thou shalt suffer no flame or spark near the battery or the fuel system.
4-Thou shalt forsake the open end of the wrench, and whenever possible to use always the box end upon thy nuts and thy bolts.
5-Thou shalt always securely block the wheels of the car before starting work, lest thee run thyself over with thine own car.
6-Thou shalt never lose thy temper or thy patience. Remember: "Act in haste and you will repent at your leisure."
7-Thou shalt always exercise extreme care when opening thy radiator, lest thee parboil thyself or some innocent bystander.
8-Thou shalt clean up any and all of the fluids that thy auto may emit, lest they ignite or poison thy pet, thy child, thy soil or thy groundwater.
9-Thou shalt always place thy car's transmission in Park or Neutral before commencing work.
10-Thou shalt never forget the laws of ASSUME, K.I.S.S., and Murphy, and never blame another person for thine own errors.

Whistle or Whine Noise from Oil Pressure Relief Valve

Some customers may notice a whistle or whine noise at idle. Upon inspection, this noise will be isolated to the AFM (Active Fuel Management) relief valve in the oil pan.
This noise should not occur unless the oil pan contains an AFM relief valve. Currently, all 2005-2006 GTO replacement engines, and some 2006 production engines, contain an AFM relief valve. However, 2005 production engines did not contain one. As a result, this noise should not be experienced on a 2005 GTO unless the engine has been replaced with an engine that contains an AFM relief valve. This AFM relief valve is not needed for the 2005-2006 GTO because it is not equipped with AFM.

Recommendation/Instructions:
If this noise is experienced, remove the AFM relief valve, insert plug part number 11561583 (M14 x 1.5) in the hole, torque it to 21 lb/ft (28 Nm), and re-evaluate the noise.
When replacing an engine that does not have an AFM relief valve, this potential noise can be prevented by installing the old oil pan onto the new engine.

ABS ACTIVATES WHEN STOPPING

Replace front ABS speed sensors. No code will be set but the ABS system will be activated when stopping on dry pavement. I found that the sensors had a slight crack in them allowing the resistance to change which caused the abs system to be activated.
